"Using knowledge of yesterday's events to prepare today's students to be tomorrow's leaders.”

Welcome to the Benet Academy Social Studies Department.

Our department offers students a selection of history and related social science courses that contribute to the classic college preparatory education they receive at Benet. All freshmen take World History and - though there is no Social Studies requirement for sophomore year - traditionally 100% of our students take one of the sophomore electives offered by our department. These electives include Advanced Placement European History, Modern World History, and Geography.

All juniors are required to take two semesters of United States History. Those who meet the entry requirements may elect to take Advanced Placement U.S. History. Our seniors have many electives to round out their social studies education at Benet. They may choose from Honors America Since 1945, Advanced Placement Economics, Advanced Placement U.S. Government & Politics, and Constitutional Law. Seniors may enroll in any other elective offered by the department as well.

The Social Studies faculty bring a variety of backgrounds, experiences and expertise to the department. Two of our teachers have more than 40 years experience at Benet. Two others will celebrate their 25th year of service this year. They, along with all of the dedicated teachers in our department work hard to insure that our students receive a social studies education that is second-to-none.

Teaching history at Benet is not our job; it is our profession and it is our passion. And it is one we feel privileged to share with our students every day.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the Social Studies program. You may read more about our courses in the curriculum guide.
