Scenario

	For the Christmas Drive, your class has raised $500. Your teacher said that the money will go to a worthy cause chosen by the class. Your job is to persuade your teacher and classmates that your favorite cause is the worthiest to receive the donation. Research information about a cause you feel strongly, so you can convince everyone that your cause is the worthiest to receive the class' hard earned cash.

1. Choose a cause which interests you. Some ideas follow:

• Gambling addiction
• Clean water
• Anti-smoking
• Drunk driving
• Human rights
• Humane treatment of animals
• AIDS research
• Abolish the death penalty
• Save the rain forests
• Endangered species
• Recycling
• Or one of your choice approved by your teacher

Fill out the worksheet that is passed out. Take time to learn the resources that are available to you. Find good articles about your topic.

Type a short essay convincing your teacher and classmates that your cause is the worthiest. You may try to answer the following questions in your essay:

• Why is this a problem?
• Why do you feel strongly about it?
• What kind of research/work is being done to remedy the problem?
• How will your class' donation help?

You must go to the sources indicated and use a variety of resources, including books, newspaper, and magazine articles.
